Exchange Rate in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka - Exchange RateEconomic activity was likely anemic in the second quarter, as a plunge in visitor arrivals following the bombings in April dented the tourism sector. Moreover, the services PMI reading in Q2 averaged well below that of Q1, while industrial production growth also ebbed noticeably. Moving to the third quarter, the economy likely remains on feeble footing. Visitor arrivals contracted again in July and August, albeit at a softer pace. That said, private-sector credit growth remained healthy in July despite decelerating, but coupled with the Bank’s 50-basis point rate cut in late August should help shore up domestic demand. Moreover, the services PMI jumped in July and industrial production growth accelerated in the same month, suggesting a likely pick-up in external demand for Sri Lankan manufactured goods.
