Exchange Rate in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka - Exchange RateEconomic growth in the third quarter looks to have picked up somewhat after the Easter bombings devastated the economy in the second quarter. The trade deficit narrowed in August on resilient export levels, while PMI readings for Q3 showed a marked improvement for both manufacturing and services over the prior quarter. Moreover, recent Central Bank policy easing should have aided domestic demand somewhat. Tourist numbers, however, continued to drop considerably following April’s terrorist attacks; in September, there were over 25% fewer visitors compared with a year ago. In other news, the IMF recently completed the sixth review of its support program for Sri Lanka, paving the way for the disbursement of around USD 164 million. In mid-November, the country will elect a new president, creating heightened short-term economic uncertainty.
