Nicaragua - Exchange Rate

The economy likely continued to contract in the first quarter of 2019, ravaged by weaker activity in the construction, trade, and hotels and restaurants sectors. This was reflected by the monthly economic activity indicator falling again in January and February, albeit at less pronounced rates than those seen late last year. On a brighter note, the labor market showed signs of stability in the first two months of the year, after over 100,000 jobs were axed last year, and remittance inflows remained upbeat in Q1. On the political front, the U.S. intensified pressure on the Ortega administration in late April by introducing sanctions on Ortega’s son and a national bank accused of financially supporting the president.
