Morocco - Exchange Rate

In Q2, the country saw steep growth, amid across-the-board improvements in private and public consumption and fixed capital investment, while exports grew more sharply than imports. Looking at GDP by industry, a bumper harvest after 2020’s drought supported agricultural output, while manufacturing output was also up notably. Nonetheless, the buoyant Q2 readings were driven largely by a base effect. Underlying activity likely remained burdened by Covid-19 restrictions which, although loosened in May, remained tough through the quarter. Turning to Q3, Covid-19 cases increased sharply in July and restrictions were tightened in August, though the accelerating vaccination program sounds a positive note going forward. On 8 September polls open for elections to parliament. The country’s election rules make a strong majority government unlikely, meaning a likely continuation of the status quo.
