Exchange Rate in Mongolia
Mongolia - Exchange RateEconomic activity shrank 10.5% on an annual basis in Q1 2020 (Q4 2019: +1.8% year-on-year), marking the sharpest contraction on record, as the coronavirus pandemic devastated demand for Mongolia’s key exports. The external sector sagged under the weight of plunging prices and falling shipment volumes of copper, coal and crude oil across the quarter, as stringent lockdown measures halted exports to neighboring China during February–March. The start of Q2 appeared equally bleak, with exports and industrial production continuing to shrink in April despite an uptick in Chinese demand for commodities. In other news, the IMF approved a request for USD 99 million of emergency financing on 18 May to aid urgent budgetary and balance of payment needs due to the significant impact the pandemic is having on government revenues. Similarly, the country received a USD 100 million loan from the Asian Development Bank on 12 May to assist in responding to the health crisis.
