Unemployment in Iran
Iran - UnemploymentIn yet more bad news for the economy, violent protests rocked the country after the government significantly hiked the state-controlled petrol price on 15 November. In response, the government shut down the public’s internet access for five days, which will have further hampered business activity. Meanwhile, U.S. economic sanctions continued to constrict the economy: Crude oil production continued to decline in October, sinking to 2.1 million barrels per day (mbpd), down from last year’s average of 3.6 mbpd. On a brighter note, in early November the government announced the discovery of an oil field in the south-west of Iran, with an estimated 53 billion barrels of crude oil. If projections are accurate, this would add approximately 34% to Iran’s proven crude oil reserves.
