Inflation in Haiti
Haiti - InflationThe economy is in a sickly way so far this year. In the second quarter, public unrest over alleged government corruption hampered tourism and business sentiment; the depreciating gourde fueled inflation and eroded purchasing power; and dry conditions hit agricultural production. This comes after the economic activity indicator declined 1.2% in the first quarter, as unfavorable weather bit into the agriculture sector, and services likely suffered from paltry tourist arrivals. In late June, the president named a new prime minister—the fourth in less than three years—after the predecessor resigned. However, the move is unlikely to notably improve the shaky political panorama, which will continue to weigh on investment and economic activity going forward.
