Haiti - External Debt

Public unrest over alleged government corruption in the USD 3.8 billion Petrocaribe embezzlement scandal has brought the economy to a halt, with travel warnings from Western embassies severely limiting tourism while inflation runs rampant and the currency keeps depreciating, despite recent support measures from the Central Bank. Meanwhile, the energy situation remains critical as the government reportedly struggles to pay debts owed for fuel imports. Against this backdrop, on 13 June an IMF spokesman declared the Fund would put on hold a USD 229 million loan to Haiti, approved by its staff in March, as changes in the economic situation of the country requires a reassessment of the country’s financing needs.
