Haiti - Exports

After the economy seemingly contracted in FY 2021 (1 October 2020–30 September 2021 amid sociopolitical turmoil, conditions remained dire at the outset of FY 2022 (1 October 2021–30 September 2022). The economy grew in Q1 FY 2022, but only marginally and mainly thanks to a low base effect. The frail security situation led to sharp supply disruptions in the quarter and forced firms to operate in a limited fashion. This, in turn, likely hurt private consumption and investment, as shown by sharper contractions in both consumer and business loans in Q1 FY 2022 compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile, in recent months, gang violence has continued to intensify, with civilian deaths and kidnappings on the rise. Moreover, soaring commodity prices have fueled inflation, likely denting already weak private consumption. That said, increasing remittances from Haitians in the U.S. should provide some respite to activity.
