Exchange Rate in Botswana
Botswana - Exchange RatePersistently challenging external conditions likely curbed the economy’s growth in the second quarter, after activity picked up in the first quarter. Merchandise exports fell more sharply in Q2, reflecting lower overseas sales of diamonds, which account for the lion’s share of total exports. At the same time, imports accelerated in the quarter, thus translating into a greater drag on growth by the external sector. Meanwhile, domestic demand metrics were mixed. A slowdown in credit to businesses likely constrained private-sector activity in the quarter, although increased bank lending to households should have buttressed consumption spending together with higher wages. In a bid to shore up lackluster activity, on 29 August, the Bank cut the policy rate by 25 basis points to an all-time-low of 4.75%, amid below-target inflation and well-anchored expectations.
