Exchange Rate in Botswana
Botswana - Exchange RateFollowing Q1’s rebound, high-frequency data for Q2 hints at improved economic conditions. Although partly flattered by a low base effect, merchandise exports came in well above Q1’s average in April–May, hinting at strengthening external demand. Similarly, soaring merchandise imports in the same period suggest that domestic activity gained steam, likely on the back of higher consumer spending amid increased household credit growth in April–May. Turning to Q3, activity has likely lost pace. Still-high numbers of Covid-19 infections recently prompted authorities to tighten restrictive measures, extending the nationwide curfew until at least 5 September. On a brighter note, the country resumed its vaccination program on 18 August following the receipt of 146,400 doses of AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines in the first half of the month, boding well for activity ahead.
