Belize - Inflation

The economy collapsed in the second quarter, pummeled by the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions. Turning to Q3, economic activity likely remained subdued by a weak tourism sector. Moreover, internal demand remained muted, as suggested by significantly lower imports. More positively, after contractions in July and August, merchandise exports soared in September, driven by a surge in sugar, banana and citrus fruit sales. Renewed external demand was fueled by recoveries in key trading partners such as the United Kingdom. In other news, general elections are scheduled for 11 November. Voters will decide between the ruling center-right United Democratic Party and center-left opposition People’s United Party (PUP). Both parties are broadly market-friendly, although the PUP’s economic proposals appear more expansionary, with a new stimulus package a major feature of their manifesto.
