Exports in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan - ExportsThe economy lost some traction in the last quarter of 2019, restrained by a less dynamic oil and gas sector, on the heels of a slight acceleration in growth in the third quarter. In contrast, the non-oil economy seems to have remained in healthy conditions. On the demand front, buoyant wage gains through November and contained price pressures in the quarter likely buttressed private consumption, as reflected by the pick-up in retail sales growth in the quarter. Less encouragingly, however, capital spending continued to decline through year-end, dragged down by lower investments in the oil and gas industry. Meanwhile, in politics, President Ilham Aliyev’s New Azerbaijan Party won a majority of seats in snap parliamentary elections held on 9 February. Coupled with support from independents, this could translate into stepping up the reform momentum going forward.
