Armenia - Trade Balance

After the economy grew at a more modest pace in Q3 amid a slowdown in private and capital spending growth, available data paints a mixed picture for Q4. Economic activity came in slightly above the previous quarter’s average in October. However, commercial loans contracted at the sharpest rate in nearly 19 years, as pandemic-related restrictions continue to drag on household spending. Meanwhile, on 9 December, violent conflict broke out with Azerbaijan despite the ceasefire brokered in November. That said, after EU-led diplomatic meetings held on 16 December, peace negotiations over the shared border have deescalated tensions. Lastly, in other news, Armenia recently lifted a year-long ban on Turkish imports that it had imposed in order to tame inflation during the Nagono-Karabakh war, while Turkey is expected to lift its own ban on Armenian products, boding well for the external sector ahead.
