Exchange Rate in Albania
Albania - Exchange RateNational accounts data revealed the strict lockdown imposed by the government wreaked havoc on the economy in the first quarter. GDP shrank 2.5% in annual terms in the first quarter (Q4 2019: -0.1% year-on-year), sunk by free-falling fixed investment, while household consumption showed more resilience and continued to expand moderately. The external sector also suffered: Exports dived and the pace of contraction in imports intensified. Meanwhile, prospects are even gloomier for the second quarter. Tourist arrivals virtually disappeared in April–May and merchandise exports plunged in the same period, spelling trouble for both external metrics and investment activity at home. On a more positive note, in early June the government announced it will remove profit taxes for small businesses, which should help support the private sector.
