Consumer prices register largest decline since March 2024 in April
Latest reading: Consumer prices fell 0.2% on an annual basis in April, swinging from March’s 0.8% rise. April's figure marked the largest fall in consumer prices since March 2024. The moderation was broad-based: Price pressures for food and beverages eased, housing and utilities costs swung into decline, and transportation prices fell at a quicker pace. Annual average inflation edged down to 0.8% in April (March: 0.9%). Meanwhile, core inflation ticked up to 1.0% in April from the previous month's 0.9%. Finally, consumer prices fell 0.21% in April over the previous month, a sharper drop than the 0.20% drop seen in March. April's result marked the weakest reading since June 2024.
