Taiwan: Consumer prices fall year-on-year for fifth month running in August
Consumer prices edged up 0.18% over the previous month in August, following July’s 0.14% rise. Looking at the details of the release, August’s increase largely reflected higher prices for food, and transportation and communication outweighing falling prices for clothing. Core consumer prices—which exclude prices for energy, fruits and vegetables— slid 0.02% month-on-month in August, contrasting July’s 0.09 rise.
Consumer prices declined 0.3% year-on-year in August, softening from July’s 0.5% fall. Meanwhile, annual average inflation was flat in August, down from July’s 0.1%.
