Netherlands: Consumer confidence picks up in June

Consumer confidence jumped to minus 3.0 in June from May’s minus 9.0. June’s result marked the best reading since March 2020. Consequently, the index moved closer to the 0-threshold, but still indicated pessimism among consumers.

The uptick was driven by less downbeat views on the economy and an improvement in consumers’ willingness to purchase. Attitudes towards the economic climate in the year ahead turned rosier, while views on the economy in the past 12 months turned less sour. Willingness to buy rose to the highest level since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, as consumers’ views on their financial in the next 12 months improved. This was in part driven by the first improvement in labor market views since October 2019.
