Indonesia: Growth in retail sales accelerates in January

Retail sales in January expanded 12.5% over the same month last year, according to Bank Indonesia’s Retail Sales Survey (RSS). The expansion was above the 11.3% increase observed in the previous month and marked the highest print in seven months. According to the Bank, January’s increase was driven mainly by strong sales of motor vehicles, parts and accessories, along with information and communication equipment.

Annual average growth in retail sales inched up from 13.3% in December to 13.4% in January. According to the survey, retailers expect sales to ease in February to a 11.9% annual increase.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see private consumption rising 5.1% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see growth in private consumption at 5.2%.
