Armenia - GDPThe country’s Constitutional Court rejected an appeal against the official parliamentary election results, enabling the newly-elected parliament to convene for the first time on 18 May. The new legislature will govern a country that is slowly turning a corner after an abysmal 2016 when the economy, dragged by the slump in commodity prices and the regional slowdown, expanded a meager 0.2%. The Statistical Institute’s economic activity index expanded at a healthy 6.6% in the January to March period over the same period last year. In addition, the health of the financial system has improved as bank liquidity has increased and credit growth in the private sector has strengthened. The IMF noted these positive developments and stated that the country is on track to complete its final review under the Extended Fund Facility later this year.
