GDP in Armenia
Armenia - GDPThe economy is likely to have experienced a sharp slowdown in 2016. Full-year sectoral data released by the National Statistical Service show that almost all the main economic sectors (agricultural, construction and electricity production) contracted over the course of the year. Imports expanded at a mild pace in 2016, further highlighting the weakness of the domestic economy, though exports rose strongly, providing a silver lining to the overall rather bleak picture. The Service’s economic activity indicator rose just 0.5% over the year, lending credence to analysts’ estimations of a slowdown. It is in this difficult economic climate that the country’s political establishment is gearing up for April’s parliamentary elections, which will be the country’s first since its move to a parliamentary regime following the 2015 referendum.
