GDP in Zambia
Zambia - GDPZambia’s debt crisis has reached a new level of uncertainty, with skyrocketing bond yields and a rapidly deteriorating debt profile raising the probability of a partial default. On 23 May, Moody’s downgraded the country’s credit rating to Caa2 and the outlook to negative, citing growing external and liquidity risks amid sharply rising debt servicing costs and dwindling foreign exchange reserves. The events have caused the kwacha to depreciate sharply and consequently lifted price pressures, choking private sector activity in turn. Soaring inflation prompted the Central Bank to hike the policy rate by 50 basis points to 10.25% in June following a 15-month hold. Meanwhile, challenging external conditions continue to weigh on growth, with exports contracting yet again in April.
