International Reserves in Yemen
Yemen - International ReservesThe conflict in Yemen appears close to subsiding, which, if sustained, could open the door to a recovery for the beleaguered economy. Negotiations have advanced in recent weeks between the government and southern separatists regarding the terms of control in the south of Yemen, and Martin Griffiths, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, stated on 17 October that fighting in this area has moderated. Griffiths also reflected positively on the recent commitment by the Houthis, who control parts of western Yemen, to suspend all drone and ballistic missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, which appears linked to a “considerable” drop in airstrikes across Yemen in early October. Meanwhile, in late September, Saudi Arabia donated USD 500 million to support UN relief work in the country. That said, civilian conflict-related deaths rose in September to the highest level so far this year.
