Imports in Yemen

Yemen - Imports

A recent national accounts estimate revealed that GDP fell 8.5% in annual terms in 2020, swinging from the 2.1% expansion clocked in 2019. The dire situation has likely continued into this year, with conditions deteriorating further in recent weeks amid a worsening currency crisis: The Yemeni rial—used in the area controlled by the internationally recognized government—plunged to a new record low in mid-October, trading at 1,400 per USD on the black market. This has led to historically high inflation for basic goods, threatening famine and extreme poverty in the country, as well as violent protests. Meanwhile, the abandoned Safer oil tanker in the Red Sea remains a key risk, as an oil spill could leave up to eight million people without running water and destroy the country’s entire fishing stock. Talks with the UN to inspect and repair the vessel have stalled, partly due to a lack of funds.
