Consumption in Mozambique

Mozambique - Consumption

After GDP rebounded in Q1, available data suggests that positive dynamics carried on in Q2. Economic activity grew again in sequential terms in April, largely on the back of rising output in the industrial and transportation sectors. However, business sentiment deteriorated for the fourth month running in May. Turning to Q3, economic conditions likely remain challenging. Surging Covid-19 cases in July prompted tighter restrictions targeting the hospitality sector, and an extension of the nationwide curfew for an undetermined period of time, boding ill for activity ahead. More positively, however, the PMI remained in expansionary territory in July, pointing to a still-solid private sector. In other news, on 8 August Mozambican forces, supported by Rwandan soldiers, managed to recapture the city of Mocímboa da Praia, which for a year had been under the control of Islamist insurgents.
