Montenegro - Industry

Following the pick-up in economic activity in the second quarter, growth should have remained relatively stable in the third quarter. Steadily declining unemployment in H1, strong credit growth and deflationary pressures should have supported private consumption, as evidenced by an acceleration in retail sales growth in July–August. Moreover, merchandise exports rebounded strongly in Q3, while import growth softened, boding well for the external sector. On the downside, industrial production contracted in August and September, after two brief months of growth, as poor weather conditions continued to hamper hydropower generation. Meanwhile, while tourist arrivals picked up in August, inflows were weaker than those seen throughout the second quarter.
