Malta - Exchange Rate

The economic scenario has soured further in the second quarter, after growth slowed to an over-decade low in the first quarter as Covid-19 induced containment measures hampered foreign demand and domestic activity. In April, unemployment hit an over two-year high, while consumer sentiment remained deep in pessimistic territory in May despite improving slightly from April’s over seven-year low. Moreover, merchandise exports plunged in April amid downbeat foreign demand. In more positive news, the national health emergency ended on 30 June, while airports are set to reopen for international travel to and from non-hotspot countries on 1 July. Moreover, on 8 June the government announced a EUR 900 million (around 7.0% of GDP) recovery package, including an extension of tax deferrals and wage subsidy programs, subsidies for utility bills for businesses, cash vouchers for different hospitality outlets, and EUR 400 million of infrastructure investment.
