GDP in Lebanon
Lebanon - GDPDespite the welcome return of a functioning government, the economy remains fragile, and government finances are in a perilous state. In late August, Moody’s downgraded the country’s credit rating from B2 to B3, citing the continuing erosion of the fiscal position and the elevated public debt burden, which is set to rise even further this year. Although President Michel Aoun has recently signed long-delayed bills to raise public sector pay and increase taxes to cover the cost, official estimates indicate that the reforms will barely have an impact on the fiscal balance or debt burden. Analysts are calling for more reforms, including to the heavily-subsidized electricity sector, in order to improve the business environment, boost revenue and put a halt to rising public debt.
