Industry in Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan - IndustryKyrgyzstan’s economy appeared to get off on the right foot this year, after stumbling in 2018. Mining output in the all-important Kumtor gold mine and upbeat hydrocarbon production powered economic activity through January and February. However, in less positive news, a curb in wholesale trade and slower remittances growth in January suggest that household spending likely decelerated. Moreover, the external sector struggled at the beginning of the year owing to a fall in raw materials exports, although declining imports cushioned the downturn. In other news, on 25 March, Vostok-Geoldobycha, a Russian mining company, won the rights to develop Jerui; given it is the country’s second-largest gold deposit, this should boost mining output over the medium-term.
