Exchange Rate in Ethiopia
Ethiopia - Exchange RateThe fiscal year 2020 (8 July 2020–7 July 2021) got off to a rocky start as violent protests broke out in the country in early July, leading to internet access being cut and certain media outlets being shut down. Furthermore, the indefinite postponement of elections originally scheduled to take place in August, as well as regional tensions over control over the river Nile, bode ill for economic activity in the first months of FY 2020. This follows a second half of FY 2019 (July 2019–July 2020) in which economic momentum was derailed by the locust plague and the global pandemic. The locust infestation devastated agricultural production and threatened food security. At the same time, Covid-19 weighed heavily on the services and industrial sectors due to domestic and foreign lockdown measures to curb the spread of the virus. In addition, foreign funds dried up due to waning investor appetite.
