GDP in Cambodia
Cambodia - GDPThe economy likely expanded strongly last year. Total lending was up over a quarter in January–July (the most recent period of available data), while construction boomed, with significantly more investment and projects approved compared to 2018. Moreover, tourist arrivals reportedly grew 8% in 2019, which should have further supported momentum. However, the external sector appeared to weaken according to recent data. The current account deficit surged in the first three quarters as import growth outpaced export growth amid a hot domestic economy. Meanwhile, in December, the IMF’s executive board concluded its Article IV consultation. The Fund highlighted the country’s recent rapid growth but warned that the withdrawal of potential market access to the EU could have a significant negative impact on activity.
