Exchange Rate in Cambodia
Cambodia - Exchange RateActivity was seemingly subdued in H1, partially due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in April and the restrictions that ensued. Exports declined in the first half of the year, while tourist arrivals were down around 90%. In H2, prospects remain mixed. Exports dropped sharply year-on-year in July–August, while tourist arrivals fell in the same period month-on-month. Nonetheless, vaccination coverage is now close to 80%. This has allowed the loosening of restrictions, likely aiding tourist numbers, which were up sharply month-on-month in September–October. Moreover, the country recently ratified the RCEP and a trade deal with China, and signed a third agreement with South Korea. While this should boost external trade with Asia, ties with the U.S. are simultaneously coming under strain: The U.S. recently imposed an arms embargo on Cambodia and put its special trade privileges under review.
