Fiscal Balance in Botswana

Botswana Fiscal Balance | Economic News & Forecasts

Botswana - Fiscal Balance

Growth accelerated to 4.3% in annual terms in Q1 (Q4 2018: +4.1% year-on-year), propelled by a robust external sector. Export growth more than doubled in the first quarter thanks to booming merchandise shipments and despite a sharp slowdown in the all-important mining sector. Domestic demand, however, weakened somewhat in Q1: Total consumption growth slid to a two-year low, chiefly due to feebler household spending, while fixed investment increased at the weakest pace since Q4 2017. Turning to the second quarter, momentum appears to have been largely sustained. Sentiment in key industries remained upbeat, thanks to a favorable outlook for global demand and prices for diamonds, as well as an improvement in tourism prospects.
