Unemployment in Belize

Belize - Unemployment

The economy likely fared well in the second quarter, following robust growth in the first quarter of the year, powered by a strong tourism sector. Tourism statistics for the first half of the year showed a surge in cruise ship arrivals, despite a slowdown in June, while overnight stays also rose at a solid rate. Moreover, a record-low unemployment rate in April and falling consumer prices should have translated into solid private consumption in the quarter. On the downside, merchandise export earnings sunk sharply year-on-year in June, owing to a steep decline in sugar revenues due to a difference in the timing for shipments of bulk sugar this year, while citrus product earnings also fell substantially. However, the value of merchandise imports also fell in the same month, largely due to cheaper diesel imports.
