GDP in Belize
Belize - GDPRevised figures for third quarter GDP described a less flattering picture than previously envisaged, with data showing economic activity contracted in the period. A slump in the secondary sector drove the downturn, as drought affected the electricity and water production sub-sector. Turning to Q4, tourism figures bounced back from a slowdown in Q3, boding well for the all-important tertiary sector. In other news, the IMF recently published its Article IV consultation report, commenting positively on efforts to improve the policy framework and the strengthening of the fiscal position. However, the Fund flagged the country’s hefty public debt levels and vulnerability to natural disasters, and encouraged measures to broaden the tax base.
