Armenia - Consumption

National accounts data revealed the economy expanded at the swiftest pace since our records began in Q2, rebounding from Q1’s contraction (Q2: +13.1% yoy; Q1: -3.3% yoy), albeit benefiting from a low base effect. The improvement was underpinned by multi-year highs growth rates across the board: Private spending bounced back from the prior quarter’s drop, while fixed investment gained significant momentum. Moreover, both imports and exports growing at healthy rates and rebounding from Q1’s fall. That said, public spending swung into contraction for the first time in two and a half years, as activity picked up and government aid subsided. Turning to Q3, authorities recently reaffirmed the extension of lockdown measures until year-end amid a mounting number of new Covid-19 infections, boding ill for activity moving forward.
