Money in Algeria
Algeria - MoneyWhile a low base effect should have produced a healthy acceleration in GDP growth in Q2, conditions will have been more muted in Q3. The non-petroleum sector likely struggled: A nightly curfew was extended through July and August amid a rock-bottom vaccination rate and rising Covid-19 cases, while continued domestic unrest likely deterred investment. That said, infections were significantly lower in September, and towards the end of the month the government announced plans to produce the Sinovac vaccine, which should boost inoculations ahead. The oil and gas sector, meanwhile, should have benefited from higher prices as well as higher oil production in July–September. However, a diplomatic spat with Morocco means the Maghreb gas pipeline will be closed from November onwards, with capacity improvements elsewhere unlikely to fully compensate.
