Current Account in Algeria
Algeria - Current AccountGrowth markedly accelerated in the fourth quarter of 2018, although still concluded a feeble economic performance in the year. The quarterly print was supported primarily by strong growth in the construction sector—buttressed by public spending—and a good showing of the services and industrial sectors; hydrocarbon output, however, continued to slump. Turning to recent events, citizens continue to demand the resignation of the acting president and prime minister a month after former President Bouteflika resigned on 2 April. In the oil sector, following the ousting of Sonatrach’s CEO, its new chief executive reaffirmed the company’s commitment to establishing partnerships with foreign energy firms, which should support investor confidence.
