Algeria - Current Account

Large scale protests continued to erupt after the general election, which had been planned for 4 July, was postponed indefinitely. Citizens have been demanding the resignation of interim President Bensalah, who is deemed too close to former President Bouteflika. Meanwhile, sweeping anti-corruption investigations have recently led to the arrest of two former prime ministers, as well as several other prominent businessmen and politicians, some connected to state oil company Sonatrach. Though fighting corruption is much needed, the disruption could further impede Sonatrach’s bid to attract crucial foreign investment this year and risks magnifying the economic paralysis which, according to analysts, could lead to sharp increases in unemployment.
