Mexico: Economic activity takes a breather in August

October 23, 2018

Economic activity grew 1.7% in August from the same month a year earlier, losing steam from the 3.3% year-on-year expansion logged in July. According to INEGI, August’s reading was driven by a broad-based slowdown across the agricultural, industrial and services sectors.

On a month-on-month basis, economic activity fell 0.1% in seasonally-adjusted terms, contrasting July’s 0.5% rise.

Banxico expects growth of 1.8%–2.8% in next year. Panelists participating in the LatinFocus Consensus Forecast expect growth of 2.2% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2020, growth is also projected to pick up to 2.2%.
