Belgium: Economic sentiment reverses course in April

April 24, 2019

The consumer confidence indicator produced by the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) dipped 1.0 point in April to minus 7.0 points. April’s downtick was due to consumers’ worsening anxieties over the broader economy and, more personally, unemployment.

Meanwhile, the NBB’s business confidence indicator fell to minus 3.2 points from minus 0.7 points in March. Deteriorating sentiment in the manufacturing- and building-related industries drove the downturn.

FocusEconomics panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.1% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast, and 1.6% in 2020. Panelists expect fixed investment to expand 2.6% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast, and 1.7% in 2020.
