Belgium: Economic sentiment plummets in December

December 19, 2018

The consumer confidence indicator produced by the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) plummeted 4.0 points to minus 5.0 points in December. The downtick was driven by an expected worsening of the economic situation in Belgium, which fed into consumers’ plans to save less over the coming year.

Moreover, the NBB’s business confidence indicator dipped from 0.4 points to minus 0.9 points on the back of abroad-based decline in sentiment. All industries but trade notched lower readings.

FocusEconomics panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.6% in 2019, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s estimate, and 1.6% again in 2020. Panelists expect fixed investment to expand 2.4% in 2019, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s forecast, and 2.0% in 2020.
