GDP in Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan - GDPAccording to preliminary official data, the economy expanded a strong 7.9% in January year-on-year, which marked an improvement over December’s 3.8% print. While the agriculture and retail sectors slowed during this period, January’s overall acceleration was driven by a massive 33.8% increase in industrial production. This surge was largely the result of a favorable base effect: production of gold—the country’s top commodity export—had dropped sharply in January 2016. On the political front, Omurbek Tekebayev, leader of the Ata Meken party, was detained on corruption charges on 27 February. Protests have erupted across the country as his supporters claim that the arrest was politically motivated to bar him from running in November’s presidential elections.
