GDP in Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan - GDPAccording to official data, the economy expanded a healthy 5.4% in the January-February period of 2017 over the same period last year. The print was driven by a double-digit increase in industrial production. This surge was largely the result of a favorable base effect: production of gold—the country’s top commodity export—had dropped sharply in the first few months of 2016. Meanwhile, agriculture growth was virtually stagnant and fixed investment decreased slightly in the surveyed period. On the political front, Sadyr Japarov, a former parliamentarian for the Ata-Zhurt party, was arrested on 26 March as he returned from exile. The government has been escalating pressure against the opposition and independent media in anticipation of November’s presidential election.
