GDP in Haiti
Haiti - GDP2016 was a challenging year for Haiti as GDP slowed to a multi-year low. A devastating hurricane struck the country and destroyed large swaths of agricultural land and important infrastructure. The impact on the primary sector, which had been showing clear signs of recovery, represents a huge setback and is reviving old fears of food insecurity. The new government, in place since February following the over-one-year long political crisis, is actively seeking funds for hurricane reconstruction which, according to a Central Bank estimate, could reach above 25% of GDP. In February, the government secured a USD 45 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank and is in talks with foreign governments to receive further funds.
