GDP in Haiti
Haiti - GDPSocial unrest and a devastating hurricane dented growth in 2016. Preliminary data show that GDP grew a modest 1.4% in annual terms last year, matching FocusEconomics’ Consensus Forecast and coming in slightly above 2015’s five-year low. The mild acceleration was underpinned by a rebound in the agricultural sector, which grew for the first time since 2009, while growth in manufacturing and services slowed considerably, largely due to the country’s political crisis. Reconstruction costs from the Category Four hurricane that struck the country in October has been estimated to amount to over 25% of GDP, according to a Central Bank study. The agricultural sector was hard-hit, which suggests that last year’s gains in agricultural output could be lost.
