GDP in Haiti
Haiti - GDPThe most recent data paint a somber picture of the impoverished country. Economic activity decelerated in the first quarter to an anemic 0.6% expansion as growth was dragged down by a sharp contraction in the primary sector and a deceleration in the tertiary sector. The steep decline in the primary sector underscores the extent of the damage caused by a massive hurricane late last year. The sharp decline in agricultural output, coupled with a drought in parts of the country, has revived old fears of food insecurity and exacerbated the country’s economic woes. The agricultural sector employs almost half of the country’s labor force and shortage of agricultural products will stoke price pressures, fanning inflation and putting household earnings and expenditure under pressure.
