Vietnam - Current Account (billions of U.S. Dollars)

The economic panorama seems to be gradually improving in Q3, after the economy virtually stagnated in Q2 due to the fallout from the pandemic. Merchandise exports rebounded strongly in July–August following a decline in Q2, reflecting healthier external demand. Furthermore, in August, retail sales grew for the first time since March, hinting at recovering consumer spending in Q3. On a less positive note, industrial output dipped for the first time in three months in August as mining activity faltered. Muted industrial activity, coupled with the reeling tourism sector—the ongoing travel ban has effectively closed the country to international visitors—signals that the economy is not out of the woods yet. Meanwhile, most of the restrictions imposed due to earlier outbreaks in Da Nang and Hai Duong provinces were removed in early September, boding well for activity at the tail end of Q3.
