Switzerland - Stock Market

The economy appears to have remained sluggish in the third quarter, with the challenging global backdrop continuing to take its toll. Contracting manufacturing activity caused the KOF barometer and PMI to fall to four-year and one-decade lows, respectively, in September. Moreover, an ongoing downturn in Germany and the overvalued franc hit merchandise exports. On a brighter note, the unemployment rate remained at an 18-year low in Q3, which, coupled with muted inflation, should bode well for private consumption in the period. Meanwhile, on 20 October, Swiss voters elected policymakers for both houses of Parliament. The conservative Swiss People’s Party won just over a quarter of all seats, while the left-wing Social Democratic Party clinched just under a fifth of seats. Notably, voter support for the Green parties surged to a combined 21%. A continuation of economic policy is expected under the new government.
