Current Account in Laos
Laos - Current AccountEconomic conditions likely remained challenging in the first half of the year. The health crisis intensified in late April, with a surge in daily Covid-19 cases leading to the establishment of tougher restrictions in the most affected areas which will have weighed on domestic activity. That said, merchandise exports gathered momentum in Q1, while resuming global trade ensured a similar pattern in Q2. Turning to Q3, the health situation deteriorated further in early July, forcing authorities to extend restrictions and to enforce stricter measures in the capital, Vientiane, including the closure of entertainment venues. Daily cases remain elevated despite the measures in place, boding ill for activity in the quarter. Meanwhile, a depreciation of the kip in the parallel market is likely suppressing households’ purchasing power this year, potentially hampering private spending.
