Jordan - UnemploymentThe economy appears to have gained further steam in Q2, on the heels of a slight acceleration in growth in Q1. Industrial production rose for the fourth successive month in May, contrasting a period of 14 consecutive months of contraction up to January. Moreover, the merchandise trade deficit decreased by 3% in January?May compared to the same period a year earlier, thanks to rising exports and falling imports. This all comes despite reports of continued difficulty moving goods from Jordan to Syria due to trade barriers, which the Jordanian government recently responded to in kind by tightening import licenses for Syrian goods. On the downside, however, the unemployment rate rose to an over one-decade high in Q1. In other news, Iraq is considering fast-tracking the construction of a planned oil pipeline through Jordan due to tensions in the Gulf.
