Consumer confidence drops in November

In November, the consumer-confidence indicator published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) fell to 92 points—a nearly three-year low—from 95 points a month earlier. For a seventh consecutive month, the indicator remained below the 100-point threshold, which is a proxy of its long-term average.

November’s reading fell amid consumers’ anxieties toward employment prospects over the short term. In line, their expected standards of living fell sharply; moreover, so did their expected ability to save and their intentions to make big-ticket purchases.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to increase 1.5% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. The panel also expects private consumption to grow 1.5% in 2020.
