Cambodia - Current Account

The economy has likely grown strongly in 2019, albeit slower than 2018’s over-decade high. A booming construction sector—fueled by an influx of Chinese capital—has supported momentum. Moreover, tourist arrivals reportedly rose 10% in annual terms in the year to September, which should have aided the service sector. In addition, total lending was up over a quarter in January–July, stoking domestic demand. However, such rapid lending growth also poses a risk to financial stability, as the IMF warned in an October staff visit. Moreover, there is elevated uncertainty over the future of preferential trade access to the EU: In November, the EU finished its preliminary report, stating a potential withdrawal of preferential access is scheduled for February.
