Current Account in Cambodia
Cambodia - Current AccountAvailable data suggests weak activity in H1, in part due to a Covid-19 outbreak in April and the restrictions imposed as a result. Exports, including garment sales, declined, while tourist arrivals were down around 90%. In H2, prospects remain mixed. On the one hand, exports fell sharply year-on-year in July, while tourist arrivals dipped in July and August month-on-month. On the other hand, the vaccination rate has accelerated, now reaching close to 78%. This allowed a loosening of restrictions in August, and in early November the government announced a further relaxation of restrictions affecting residents and inbound tourists, likely boosting activity in the final stretch of the year. In politics, in October the government presented its 2022 budget, which signals greater fiscal stimulus.
