Fiscal Balance in Chile
Chile's fiscal deficit varied notably over the last decade. Early in the decade, high copper prices and robust economic growth contributed to a healthy fiscal position. However, declining commodity prices, social spending increases and the COVID-19 pandemic led to a growing deficit in later years. Following a one-off surplus in 2022, the budget slipped back into deficit in 2023 and 2024, though the fiscal shortfall remained manageable. The fiscal balance in Chile averaged -2.8% of GDP in the decade to 2022, above the Latin America average of -4.7% of GDP. The fiscal balance in 2022 was 1.1% of GDP.
