South Africa: Inflation rises in September
Latest reading: Consumer prices rose 3.4% on a year-on-year basis in September, following a 3.3% rise in the prior month.
Relative to the prior month’s figures, there were higher price pressures for housing and utilities (+4.5% on a year-on-year basis vs +4.3% in August) and transportation (-0.1% vs -1.4% in August). In contrast, price pressures reduced for food and non-alcoholic beverages in September (+4.5% vs +5.2% in August).
Meanwhile, core consumer prices increased 3.2% in annual terms in September, following a 3.1% rise in the previous month.
Lastly, consumer prices increased 0.19% in September in month-on-month terms, following a 0.10% decline in the previous month.
