Peru: Business sentiment improves, but remains in negative territory in January
Business confidence came in at 44.5 in January, up from December’s 41.2. January’s result marked the best reading since May 2021. Despite the uptick, the index remained entrenched below the 50-threshold for the 10th month running, and thus indicated continued pessimism among businesses.
The mild improvement in firms’ expectations came amid a broad-based uptick in most sub-sectors in January. Looking at the details, firms’ views regarding their sector, future demand for their products, the employment situation, and investment in their firms all rose this month. However, the majority still remained in pessimistic territory, while views regarding their company’s situation deteriorated in the month.
