Euro Area: Economic sentiment edges up in September
Latest reading: Economic sentiment inched up to 95.5 in September from 95.3 in August. However, the index remained below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
The improvement was driven by stronger sentiment among consumers and in the construction sector. In contrast, sentiment deteriorated in the retail and industry sectors. Moreover, confidence waned in the services sector.
In terms of specific countries, sentiment improved in France, Italy and Spain, while it weakened in Germany and the Netherlands.
Regarding indicators that are not used to calculate the index, employment expectations waned, while the economic uncertainty index rose in September.
